The Distinctive Khala Hairless Dog

HairlessKhalaPeruIncaRuinSiteThe Khala Hairless is a tough little dog, surviving from the coastline to high in the Andes. The Hairless Khala is a Latin American breed of hairless dogs originally from Bolivia.

They are also known by other names like Chala, Kahla, Perro K'ala and Caa Allepo. They are used in Bolivia today as hunting dogs. The Kahala is considered to be the largest of the Xolo breeds.

 

Khala General Description

The Hairless Khala, come in two varieties, the Hairless Khala Medio which is short legged and the Hairless Khala Grande which is longer legged. Hairless Khalas are usually grey in color.

Both the Medio and Grande have really small dome shaped heads and a long pointed muzzle with hair growth mainly on their heads. Their ears either stand out straight or fold downwards in a triangular shape. They have big oval eyes, small teeth, a thin muscular neck, small body frame, and a thin long droopy tail. This hairless usually weighs anywhere between 15-55 pounds and are between 14-20 inches long.

The Khala's nails are described as having heavy claws somewhat longer than most breeds' and are very sensitive and resistant to having them trimmed.

Hairless dogs tend to be quite clean and free of odor since they don’t have hair which can entrap dirt and debris. Moisturizer is needed to keep their skin nice and soft and sun block in the summer to protect the hairless body and a winter coat if you live in cold climates.

Hairless Khala are non-shedding or hypoallergenic dogs and can be good for people who are allergic to dogs.

Khala Character

The Khala dogs are affectionate like most dogs and bond quickly with the family. They are known to be quite protective with their family and reserved with strangers.

They are intelligent, gentle dogs and keenly sensitive to the emotions of their owners. Many have been known to develop gastrointestinal problems due to stress at home.

The Khala does not require a lot of exercise making it an ideal apartment dog or dog for a grandmother.
