The Language of Your Dog

regan and madisonAs much as we would like to think that our dogs are talking to us each day we really know that they are not. I know they bark their little hearts out at times but are unable to speak to express their feelings of uncertainty, aggression, fear, and playfulness.

But wait they do have a language, a visual language body language that conveys all their emotions to you and anyone willing to learn. As a member of their pack it will do you benefit to learn their language and can in just a little time.

my dogs and IOut of my five dogs they all know my different looks of instruction. I have one dog CB who is extra smart and watches me like a hawk, I think he know at times what I am about to do before I ever do it. When he is outside with the other dogs begging to be let inside, I can simply point and motion for him to run around the house where I will let him in, without the other 3 coming in. I like to show off his intellect to my guest, I am a proud pack Mother.

I do all this through my body language and they in turn use their bodies to talk to me. Our youngest dog, Kik is very expressive through his body. I am teaching him not to force his love onto everyone which he does so graciously.

Just like humans send many messages with their bodies so do our pets. As matter of fact my dogs know my body languages as well as my verbal cues. Along with body language their verbal cues like growling, whimpering, and barking help them express themselves.

Your Dog's Love Language

A happy dog carries its tail and ears well without any tension, they may have their tongue waging and jaw will be relaxed. They will lick you everywhere and they love to do this while you are in your Sunday best.

Dogs love to play and they have a special little bow they give when eager for affection. I know you have had to see it if you spend time with them. It is that dip down with the front body into a crouch, perhaps even raising one hand and leaning to one side. Their head almost touching the ground all while their jaws and ears are relaxed. Some dogs jump backwards and forwards looking up at you just waiting for the smallest gesture that you are ready to play.

I believe that it is this play time that bonds our pack together.

Your dog will have a very obvious submission or surrender posture, usually in a low crouch with the front feet raised one at a time. Some submissive dogs turn sideways to present a flank.

Their eyes are very expressive as well, they brighten when happy. Like us some dogs raise their upper eyelids in surprise or quizzical, they often emphasize this enquiring look by a tilt of the head. I love to see this look in my own dogs, it is rather precious.

What Body Posture to Look For

Their body language is exhibited through their body posture, ear posture, eyes, lips, tongue, tail and hair. Your dog's hair will literally stand straight up in a number of different situations such as being confronted by an aggressive dog or a guest surprises them.

Is it important to take notice of the posture of the ears because when your dog's ears are held very tightly to their head, teeth are showing, their tail is held down, snarls or even barks these are signs of aggression. Watch out. A dog brought up in a normal, and healthy conditions, display such behavior out of fear so try to find the root of the problem before responding to harshly.

You should not persistent in petting an animal when they exhibit these behaviors or you could get hurt.

This is just a small sample of the many postures that my dogs have displayed throughout the years, each of my dogs have had its own personality and unique way of communicating with me.

They are a real joy in this world so take some time today to learn your dog's language of love and you to will be delighted to find how much you are truly loved.
