Common Dog Breed Mixers For Those Cute Designer Dog
You’ve hear about dogs who are a cross between to pure breed dogs? If you don’t know what a Designer Dog is exactly then this article “What You Get When You Get A Designer Dog” is must read.
For now let’s look at a few of the most common designer dogs that you can find living all over the world and you may be surprised at some of these mixes.
Please don’t try this at home, breeding designer dogs is a serious undertaking, far more complicated than paring two purebred dogs together to see what you get. An educated breeder goes to great lengths to ensure a healthy designer dog.
These names alone will have you laughing today, after all it is hard to even say words like Goldendoodles and Pekeapoos without smiling.
Here are just a few of the designer dogs (hybrids) the American Canine Hybrid Club recognizes and I will give a description for a few.
Labradoodles = Labrador Retrievers + Poodles
The Labradoodle design really started it all, and they are very irresistible. Vice President Biden, Jennifer Aniston has one, and Tiger Woods has two. Created in the late 1980’s by a Veterinary for a friend that was allergic to dogs, they secret less dander than other breeds. Because of the breed cross you never know what kind of coat you will get, there are three kinds; straight, fleece that is wavy, and wool which is the curliest. Labradoodles need room to run, they need things to do. Easy to train but needs help to focus, easy to groom, and make great family dogs.
Goldendoodles = Golden Retrievers + Poodles
The Goldendoodles are happy, fluffy, and energetic. They are very popular I believe is contributed to their adorable features. Developed in the mid 1990’s the smart Poodle and the loving behavior of the Golden Retriever. Their coat can be very flat like the Retriever or very wavy, or the tightly curled poodle coat. The Goldendoodles less skin dander than most dogs. They come in a variety of colors, and most are medium size with males weighting 50 to 80lbs.but there is a mini version when the Golden Retriever is breed with a Toy Poodle. Both the breeds that the Goldendoodles come from are very trainable and great with children.
Chiweenie = Chihuahuas + Dachshund Developed
Chiweenie is a Mexican Hotdog they tend to be very expressive a charming trait this sweet little mix has. The Chiweenie designer dog was developed in the late 1990’s to help minimize back problems in the Dachshund. A longer lower Chihuahua, with those big bat like ears. Cute with big ears that like to sunbath. The Chiweenie’s are known for easy training but start early to prevent the yapping that the mix is predisposition for.
-Chorkie = Yorkshire Terrier + Chihuahua
The Chorkie started popping up in the 90’s. The Chorkie can take on multi characteristics of their parents, they can have a shorter coat or longer coat like the Yorkie. Chorkie’s are very small yet in most cases have a Napoléon complex. Chorkie’s have the loud nature of both breeds, they love to yap. But their fiery nature makes them get watch dogs. They have very sympatric eyes that have a distinct black line around them and it is a enduring quality. There small size make them an ideal apartment door.
Cockapoos (Cockerpoos or Spoodles) = Cocker Spaniels + Poodles
The Cockapoo is a sweet designer dog who has been around since 1960’s in the US. They are said to resemble our little childhood hero Benji. All colors and combinations are acceptable for this little designer dog but kinky curls is not. The Cockapoo’s nonshedding coat should instead be straight, wavy, or loosely curly. They come in all different sizes the toy weighting less than 12 pounds and the maxi weighting more than 19 pounds. No matter what the size you will most certainly have a loyal, intelligent, and friendly designer dog.
One of the top three designer dogs according to Animal Planet. You have that slightly smoochie face with the floopy ears, one loving companion. They have an amazing sense of smell from their Beagle parent, so when you take them out they are going to smell everything. Pugs like to bark and Beagles like to howl, so the Puggles do both. The Puggle is considered a lap dog. They have a really short coat that is easy to groom. The Puggle can be black or multicolored, they resemble a Mastiff. The Puggle has lots of energy and love their families.
The Maltipoo is a beautiful soft and fluffy designer dog, with a low shedding coat that comes in a variety of colors. The little designer dog weights in at 5 and 12 pounds, but this pint size dog has the heart of a lion. This little dog loves attention and will most generously devote himself to his or her family whole heartedly. The Malitpoo is known to be great with children.
Yorkipoos = Yorkshire Terrier + Poodle
Yorkipoos are fairly new to the designer dog world but are gaining popularity all the time. The are little dogs standing only 7 to 12 inches tall and weight 4 to 15 pounds. Like so many other designer dogs they have a low allergenic coat. The smooth coat is silky and wavy and comes in a variety of colors. The Yorkipoo is spunky and very socialable and known to be a quicker learner than their parent purebred Yorkshire Terrier. They just seem to love learning and pleasing their families.
Pekeapoos = Pekingeses + Poodles
Pinny-Poo = Miniature Pinscher + Poodle
Shihpoos ( or Pooshihs) = Shih Tzu + Poodles
Border Collie Terriers = Border Collies + German Shepherd Dogs or Australian Shepherds
Alaskan Huskies = Siberian Huskies + Alaskan Malamutes + Lurchers
Golden Labradors = Golden Retrievers + Labrador Retrievers
Dorgis = Dachshunds + Pembroke Corgis or Cardigan Corgis
Bagels = Beagle + Basset Hounds
Chihchons = Chihuahuas + Bichons Frises
Shihchons = Shih Tzus + Bichons Frises
Bull Boxers = Bull Dogs + Boxers
Bi-Tzus = Bichons Frises + Shih Tzus
Saint Berdoodle = Saint Bernard + Poodle
Schnoodle = Schnauzer + Poodle
