The Long Eared Bassett Hound

Bassett Hound

Origin

bassettThe Bassett Hound is an old breed which is a direct descendent of the Bloodhound.  The name Bassett Hound comes from the French word “bas” meaning low.  The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885. It has been recorded; George Washington owned Bassett Hounds which were given to him by Lafayette after the American Revolution.

Group

Hound, Hunting

Life Span

10 to 13 years (My Bassett lived for 13.5 years)

Color

The Bassett typically will be brown, red, and  white, tri-colored. Both of my Bassett Hounds were red and white. Distribution of color and markings is of no importance.

Coat

Smooth, short haired coat is very easy to groom, with moderate shedding. Their skin is loose and elastic, rolls up around ankles.

Height

Males: 12 to 15 inches, 50 to 65 pounds

Females: 11 to 14 inches, 45 to 60 pounds

This are meant to be for the typical Bassett Hound.

Trainability

Start with their training as earlier as possible especially if in doors.  While Bassett reflexes are slow they are great smeller’s. They will do anything for food.

The Bassett Hound is extremely trainable and desire s to please his master.

Activity level

Medium

Known Health Problems

The Bassett’s build keeps him from carrying excessive weight; it places to heavy a load on their legs and spine. Watch their diet, my Bassett’s love Mayfield Ice cream.

Best Home

The Bassett Hound loves to play and explore outside and if given the opportunity will spend hours doing so.  Bassett’s are lead by their noses, and new owners must be prepared for the thrill of the hunt when walking their companions.

But bring your Bassett inside and they will lay under your feet all night.  I feel this dog would do fine without a yard as long as they are given the opportunity to run and play; keeping healthy. Extremely social breed, loves attention and children. The Basset’s sweet, gentle nature makes him/her a great companion.
